Christmas Sugar Cookies are a festive and easy sugar cookie recipe that is fun to bake and eat! Simple homemade sugar cookie dough is cut into snowflake shapes and then decorated with delicious icing! Perfect for any holiday cookie tray, and so easy to make!
Ingredients
For the Cookies:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, (large)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, (measured correctly)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
For the icing:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons water or milk
  • Christmas sprinkles, optional
Instructions
To make Cookies:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F with a rack in the center. Whisk together flour with baking powder and salt in a small bowl and set aside.
  2. Using a stand-up or handheld mixer, beat the butter together with sugar.
  3. Add vanilla extract and egg to the mixture and beat to combine.
  4. Add flour in 3 parts until fully incorporated.
  5. Divide the dough into two equal parts. On a lightly floured surface, roll into ¼-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your favorite shapes.
  6. Bake cookies on a parchment or silicone-lined baking sheet at 350˚F for 10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  7. Let the cookies cool for about 5 minutes on the baking sheet before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.
To make Icing:
  1. In a small bowl, use a fork to beat together all the ingredients
  2. The mixture should be very thick but still pourable.
  3. Transfer the icing to a squeeze bottle using a funnel. You can also scoop into a pastry bag fitted with a very small plain tip. Before you begin icing any cookies, take a few moments to practice on a piece of parchment paper to get the feel of the icing.
  4. Holding the bottle or bag tip directly over one corner of a cookie, create lines and dots to enhance the snowflake shape
  5. If desired, garnish with edible glitter, or sprinkles. Let the icing set before serving.
