Coffee and Its Health Benefits: What To Know

Whether it’s part of your morning diet or just for the fun of it, drinking coffee in moderation has its benefits. Regular coffee is brewed or prepared at home, and not the ones bought in cafes. Coffee is more than just for boosting your energy. Aside from its bittersweet taste and intense aroma, the following are reasons why drinking coffee is beneficial:

1. Decreases Risk of Cognitive Decline

Dementia or cognitive decline issues caused by neurodegenerative diseases affect people aged 65 and above. When you’re suffering from such a disease, your cognitive function and memory become impaired. One of the most common types of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, and it affects your language and thought as you become older.

Aside from exercising and eating healthy, coffee can lower your risk of having a cognitive decline. The building up of beta-amyloid plaque causes Alzheimer’s, but the caffeine contained in coffee can prevent the plaque from building up, thereby reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s or dementia. By brewing and drinking at least three to five cups of regular coffee, you are more likely to keep your brain healthy.

2. Reduces Risks of Developing Diabetes

Diabetes occurs when the body cannot effectively use hormones or if it lacks insulin. This problem causes blood glucose levels to increase. The most common type is type 2 diabetes, which results from lack of exercise and obesity. Other types of diabetes are gestational and type 1 diabetes. But type 2 diabetes is the most common one that can lead to amputations due to the limbs’ poor blood flow, kidney failure, blindness, stroke, and heart disease.

Aside from caffeine, coffee contains a bioactive compound called cafestol, which has a potential role in reducing the risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2. Cafestol improves insulin sensitivity, decreases fasting glucose levels, and increases the secretion of insulin. Therefore, the more coffee you consume daily, the more chances you have of lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Moreover, partnering coffee with healthy foods can be more effective. For example, if you love sweet snacks, switch to vegan recipes when making your snacks to help decrease the risk of diabetes.

3. Lowers the Danger of Acquiring Heart Diseases

Heart diseases or coronary heart diseases include coronary artery disease, blood vessel diseases, and heart rhythm issues. In coronary artery disease, the health of your heart is in trouble when calcium exists in the arteries. Calcium is good for teeth and bones, but causes a problem when found in the arteries responsible for nutrients and oxygen supplication for the heart.

When calcium deposits build up in the coronary arteries, it blocks or narrows the arteries that can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Surprisingly, drinking coffee in moderation, which is about 3 to 5 cups a day, can lessen calcium deposits in the arteries, thanks to the antioxidants found in coffee.

4. Can Be One of the Most Significant Sources of Antioxidants

Coffee has more antioxidants than cocoa and green tea. Unprocessed antioxidants have approximately 1,000 antioxidants, so coffee is regarded as a primary source of antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize metabolic functions, causing free radicals, which, in turn, leads to chronic disease produced from oxidative stress. They also fight inflammation that can result in many types of cancers, atherosclerosis, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. These conditions cause your cells to be damaged, but with antioxidants, your cells are protected.

5. Helps Burn Excess Fat

Caffeine is also a proven natural substance that can help in burning fat. An increase in adrenaline or epinephrine hormones signals the body to break down fat. The epinephrine goes through the nervous system and releases fatty acids into your blood.

Releasing these fatty acids is not enough to lose fat, but with caffeine intake, you’re more likely to burn fat. For this to be more effective, supplement your coffee intake with proper diet and regular exercise.

Moreover, caffeine also increases your metabolic rate, which results in burning more calories. However, the effects of caffeine for most people do not last long as they become tolerant to caffeine. But even if it does not burn calories for the long term, caffeine can likely help you eat less at it blunts your appetite.

Whether you are a coffee lover or not, drinking coffee can help you in some areas of your health. As long as you drink moderately, you can achieve more of its positive effects. Coffee, however, should not be used as a medicine for any sickness, but only as drinks to help you lower your risk of developing the illnesses mentioned above.
