What is a non-alcoholic wine?

A bottle of non-alcoholic wine is a regular wine without alcohol content.

Non-alcoholic wine follows the process of making alcoholic wine. In addition to those processes, non-alcoholic wines have a de-alcoholization process. The de-alcoholization removes the alcohol content of the wine.

History of non-alcoholic wine

There is a long history of how non-alcoholic wine existed. Before that, wines had been part of human consumption for millenniums.

The Jung family owned a vineyard in the Rhine region of Germany. Carl and Maria Jung are spouses. Carl makes the wine, and Maria travels across the country to sell their wines. During her travel, she noticed that people buy less alcohol because of their doctor’s advice. So their family tried to find a way to make de-alcoholize wines. Carl Jung Jr. filed for a patent for the process of de-alcoholization in 1908.

The process is continuously improved. In 1869, Thomas Bramwell Welch, a British–American Methodist minister, started the mass production of pasteurized grapes. These pasteurized grapes are for making alcohol-free wine for Holy Communion.

How is alcohol-free wine made?

You can make non-alcoholic wine from grapes. There are two main processes for making non-alcoholic wines, this includes:

Vacuum Distillation

The vacuum distillation method lowers the vapour pressure of the wine. The process evaporates ethanol within the mixture raising to the lowest point the temperature of the wine.

Few non-alcoholic wine producers use this process because the aroma evaporates with the alcohol to an ABV below 0.5%.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis is the process involving the removal and reduction of the alcohol content in wine. The process does not change the original elements and flavours of the wine.

The process is expensive and involves using tight filters to purify the wine to become non-alcoholic. The process separates ethanol and water to separate containers. Then, the mixture goes through a distillation process to make a non-alcoholic wine.
