If you are a foodie, then the chance to try out local delicacies is one of the biggest arguments in favour of foreign travel. However it is not just the food itself that can be fascinating, as the world is full of unique eateries that offer a chance to feast on cultural as well as culinary flavours.
Insects in the Backyard
When it comes to interesting restaurants for adventurous tastes they really don’t come much odder than one serving meals made out of insects! That is what is on offer at this restaurant in Thailand, which is the first in the world where everything on the menu is made out of edible insects. The head chef is Mai Thitiwat and he has created a range of delicious dishes that blend these bugs with tiramisu, tortellini and other ingredients. Eating insects is something that is not at all uncommon in other cultures, but no other restaurant in the world makes them quite as central to its dishes as this place and the results are both tasty and healthy.
Ithaa
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to eat your meal beneath the sea? Well if you have then Ithaa is there to satisfy that curiosity. This undersea eatery can be found on Rangali Island, in the Maldives, and it has gained a particularly strong culinary reputation for the quality of the seafood found on its menu. You walk across a jetty of wood and then down a long staircase to reach the restaurant, which has glass walls so you can watch colourful tropical fish swim around you while you eat. This restaurant first opened its doors 14 years ago and the name ‘Ithaa’ translates as ‘mother of pearl.’ The only downside to Ithaa is that it is very small and exclusive, with seating for just 14 people at a time – so make sure to book!
Labassin Waterfall Restaurant
You will surely have guessed what is so unusual about this restaurant from the name. The Labassin Waterfall Restaurant can be found in San Pablo City, in the Philippines and it is the only place where you can let your toes tingle in the cool flow of a waterfall while you enjoy your meal. Given how hot the climate in the Philippines is, the water is the perfect natural dehumidifier and it is not even the only thing to make this restaurant special. Labassin also features traditional Filipino music and dance shows that let you sample the culture of the country. Furthermore, if you need help working up an appetite, the surrounding locale provides opportunities for taking a hike!
There is something about the experience of eating good food in a unique and eccentric setting that makes the meal itself taste that bit better. If you decide to visit any of these three eateries on your travels then you will be sampling something that cannot be found anywhere else on earth.
