The perfect cup of coffee can be the best way to start your day, a needed afternoon pick-me-up, or an after-dinner delight. But we all know you can spend an arm and a leg ordering coffee for pickup or out at a fancy restaurant. Thankfully, it’s easy to brew a great cup of coffee at home.
In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps of getting the perfect cup, maximized for flavor, rich body, and a smooth sip that will energize you and leave you wanting more. Learning to brew your own perfect cup will save you money and time, and ensure complete satisfaction every time.
- The beans. Just like the key to a great meal is starting with quality ingredients, the key to a great cup of coffee is starting with top-of-the-line coffee beans. In a pinch, bulk big box grocery store beans will work, but the holy grail is small-batch beans from your coffee supplier.
Smaller batches of beans can be much richer in flavor, higher in quality, and give you that full-bodied coffee taste you’re looking for while supporting family-owned small businesses. And at comparable cost to the big guys, there’s no reason not to buy your beans as fresh as possible.
- The grind. Once you’ve got those beautiful beans, it’s important to grind them the right way to release the aromatics and get the taste you want. Grinding your own beans may seem a hassle at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll realize how easy it really is – and how much better your cup of joe will be for it.
The National Coffee Association has a helpful rundown of the flavors you can expect from different grinds. Generally, coffee that is ground finer will be more bitter. If you go too fine, you’ll wind up brewing yourself a whole cup of espresso! And just as important as the grind itself is the method of brewing you use with each grind (more on that below).
- The brewing equipment. We’re all used to an old-fashioned drip coffee maker, but lately, the world of coffeemakers has expanded to include all kinds of presses, brewers, and kettles. One of our favorites, for a small batch of coffee that hits the mark every time, is a French press.
If you’ve never used one before, there are plenty of helpful guides online that will have you running to your local kitchen supply store to pick one up. The French Press will produce a smooth, velvety, rounded flavor. If you prefer a more bitter and acidic cup, a different tool like a pour-over method may be for you.
Between presses, pour-overs, old-fashioned machines, percolators, capsule coffee machines and other methods, what’s important is that you find the right equipment for the cup you want. It can take some experimentation but will be totally worth it in the end.
The beans, the grind, the brew
Through a few simple steps, you can become the aspiring home barista of your dreams. No more waiting in line, no more lattes that cost more than an entrée, and no more settling for less flavorful coffee. Whether you want a bold flavor with a full body or an acidic punch to wake you up, the coffee suited exactly to your taste is within reach.
Once you’ve got the freshest beans, a fine-tuned grind, and the right brewing equipment for your palate, you’re assured of the most consistent cup of coffee – all from the comfort of your own home. After that, add whatever creamers, sweeteners, and syrups you desire, and sip away!
